Google Discontinues Software Support For Third-Party Smart Displays

You may have noticed that Lenovo, JBL and LG also have their own smart displays to compete with products like the Google Nest Hub or the Amazon Echo Show. Similar to Google's Lenovo Smart Display products (7″, 8″ & 10″), JBL Link View and LG Xboom AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display are also powered by Google Assistant.

Google has recently quietly continued to discontinue software support for all of the above smart displays. These products were launched in 2018 and 2019 when the Android Things platform was trending before Google shut it down in December 2020.

All of these products are now considered expired and unlike the Nest Hub which uses Fuchsia which is still maintained by Google even though the product is years old.

There is another speculation that after the Pixel Tablet is launched later, which this tablet can also be a smart display with a special dock Google may slowly end support for the Nest Hub software. The future of the smart screen will be a hybrid tablet which Apple also reportedly wants to present with more or less the same product.
