Google Is Developing “Nearby Calling” Features – Answer Phone Calls On Other Devices

The Apple ecosystem is the best connected system for their products. If you're using an iPhone it's invalid if you don't have an Apple Watch and then you should have an iPad, AirPods and a MacBook. This is because Apple offers a user-friendly experience when using all their products.

A feature that many Android brands should emulate is Continuity. For example a phone call on an iPhone can be answered on a MacBook, iPad or Apple Watch even if these devices do not have a SIM card. Samsung tried to offer the same features on their phones and tablets but the usage is still not as satisfactory as Apple's.

Google will later offer this feature directly built into Android through Nearby Calling. This feature is found in Android 14 Developer Preview 2 code as SYSTEM_CALL_STREAMING. If a phone call is received on an Android phone the user can stream this call by answering it on a tablet or smart screen. This feature has been in development for years and we may finally see it officially offered.

This feature also supports voice calls like on WhatsApp. One of the reasons why this feature was discovered is because Google will finally have its own tablet, the Google Pixel Tablet, which can be transformed into a smart screen or tablet. So a feature like this is quite interesting for Google to make their ecosystem a challenger to Apple.
