HoloLens 2 Receives Free Update To Windows 11

The Microsoft HoloLens 2 augmented reality (AR) headset was launched with the Windows Holographic OS operating system based on Windows 10. Today Microsoft announced that all HoloLens 2 will receive an update to Windows 11 for free as a step to facilitate the support of this headset to users.

This upgrade to Windows 11 will be delivered in H1 2023. In addition to better and consistent security patches for HoloLens 2, this update also brings several new features such as Microsoft Edge WebView2 allowing current web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript to be used on HoloLens 2 applications .

Updates are optional and owners can remain on the Hologrphic OS if this is desired. With Microsoft having laid off thousands of staff due to the post-pandemic situation, among those affected is the team developing HoloLens 2. It sounds like the focus will no longer be on AR sets and it will only continue for military purposes such as IVAS headsets.
