In Japan Lasers Are Used To Eliminate Pests

 For the past decade we have been following the development of laser weapons developed by the United States and Israel. Starting as an experiment like the animated series G I Joe, anti-missile and mortar systems are now used by Israel to defend their borders. But in Japan laser shooting technology has been used on a smaller scale to kill pests.

This insect eliminator laser system was developed by the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University to eliminate Spodoptera litula which is a moth that destroys plants. It can be automatically eliminated when detected by this laser system. According to the developer, this laser system is expected to be commercialized by 2025.

It is a bit extreme to use a laser to simply eliminate pests. But this might just be a stepping stone before it can be used as a weapon to destroy aliens like in the Ultraman, tokusatsu and anime series.
