Microsoft's New Naming System For Hackers Makes It Easier To Trace Their Origins

The world needs the internet to continue to operate but there are many vulnerability issues that are used by certain parties to steal information. There are many hacker groups online that are often associated with specific countries. Russia for example is known for hackers using ransomware while North Korea steals crypto.

Microsoft Security this morning introduced a new naming system for the hacker groups they detect. It uses weather-based names such as Blizzard, Sleet, Storm and Tsunami. This is then followed by a randomly assigned second name. The new system is similar to that used by various meteorological departments to name storms.

There are also special designations for hackers that are newly detected or not related to a specific country. With this clearer naming system, efforts to counter and contain hacker attacks are expected to be simplified.
