The weather and environment in the middle of the sea pose challenges to the equipment used by PETRONAS for their operations. Last week PETRONAS announced that they have developed a protective coating Proshield+ that is not only rust resistant but also corrosion resistant.
Proshield+ was developed in-house by PETRONAS as an alternative to the epoxy paint currently used by the industry. The level of water resistance and corrosion resistance of Proshield+ is also three times better than epoxy paint. It only needs to be used as a paint admixture and can last up to 16 years equivalent to twice the life of current paint. No changes need to be made to existing painting equipment to use Proshield+.
This is achieved through the use of graphene material in Proshield+. According to PETRONAS, with the use of this product, the cost of painting each platform can be reduced by up to 66% in addition to reducing the carbon footprint by up to 50%.
