Seagate Pays a Fine of RM 1.33 Billion for Selling Hard Drives to Huawei

Seagate agreed to pay a $300 million (~RM 1.33 billion) fine to the US Department of Commerce for selling hard drives to Huawei. After being included in the entity list, the sale of hardware with U.S.-owned technology to Huawei must first obtain permission from the Department of Commerce.

After investigation, Seagate was found guilty of selling 7.4 million hard drives to Huawei between August 2020 and September 2021 worth $1.1 billion. According to Seagate they sell it because they feel authorization is not necessary if hard drives that are not manufactured outside the U.S. Because of this they agreed to settle the case by paying $15 million every quarter for six years.

Previously Huawei received hard drive supplies from Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba. Only Seagate continued sales after technology restrictions were imposed on Huawei for allegedly sharing US-owned technology used with the Chinese military.
