The Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) has now issued instructions to all telecommunication companies, in preventing the inclusion of URL links in SMS transmissions.
This step is to overcome a number of online scams, which often send SMS to users, leading to the user being deceived by clicking on the link on it.
The implementation of this directive will be done in stages, as soon as possible.
Previously, many users were deceived by sending links via SMS, similar to banking service providers or digital wallets – making users click on the link, and subsequently experience fraud and lose money on the account. Since then, several digital wallet service providers have stated that they will not send any URL links along with SMS from them.
Further to that, with this new step by SKMM, we both hope that fraud and scams can be reduced dramatically after this.
