Before Android smartphones used fingerprint scanners, face scans using cameras or additional sensors unlocked the device all using a password, pin or special pattern. Android hardcore users will take advantage of the Smart Lock feature as it offers more ways to unlock the device.
Among them is On-body detection which will not lock the device if it detects that it is close to the user's body. Trusted places uses the location that has been set by the user. For example just arriving at the office or when at home the device will not be locked. Lastly is Trusted devices which when an Android device connects to another device using Bluetooth such as a laptop or smart watch the phone will not be locked if the two devices are close.
The latest Smart Lock is seen to be rebranded to Extend Unlock. Not sure why Google wants to change the name of this feature but it looks like it will happen in the near future. My Nothing Phone (1) device when opening Smart Lock it just displays a blank page. Indicates that part of the Google server may be being updated.
Features like this use Google Play Services updates only. On selected Pixel devices Smart Lock already uses the name Extend Unlock and the same problem as mine also occurs this settings section only displays a blank page.
Will you use this feature?
