The Government May Introduce a Second 5G Network Next Year

As you already know, the 5G network that is used by the people is currently being managed and maintained by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), a GLC company under the Malaysian Ministry of Finance.

In summary, all telecommunication companies that want to use the 5G network in Malaysia must first register with the DNB and pay the company to use the spectrum of this network.

The local 5G network was officially introduced at the end of 2021 with Yes and TM being the first two telecommunication companies to use this 5G network. Now, in 2023, almost all local telecommunications companies have started using this 5G network with the Ministry of Communications and Digital saying that the coverage of the network has reached 55 percent of populated areas in Malaysia.

Recently, a report from Reuters said that the Malaysian government is planning to develop a second national 5G network that is not under the management of DNB with the aim of increasing competition and to avoid the monopoly of one company which is seen to cause difficulties for users if the network cannot operate. well.

Reuters sources say that the Malaysian government will introduce this second 5G network as early as January 2024, but for now the government is still in discussions to see how this second network can be developed. The proposal paper for the development of this second 5G network will reportedly also be proposed in Parliament this Wednesday.

Even so, the plan for the development of this second network is seen to depend on whether DNB can achieve the Malaysian government's target and ensure that 80 percent of the populated areas can use their 5G network by the end of this year.
