Earlier today we reported that TM showed off their latest Unifi internet connection plan that featured download speeds as fast as 2Gbps. It is not surprising that in order to get this speed on your device, the modem, internet connection router and even the device must support a connection with this speed.
However, for this Unifi 2Gbps plan, we have observed some rather disturbing things about this speed. Through the marketing materials we received from an anonymous user, we were able to show how this fast internet connection would be presented to customers.
Technically, yes customers will receive connections as fast as 2Gbps, but this appears to be only in the aggregate. What is meant here is that users will receive a 1Gbps + 1Gbps connection, because according to the marketing materials and also Unifi's own FAQ page, the WiFi 6 router that will be supplied by TM for this plan comes with four Ethernet plugs that support a wired internet connection as fast as 1Gbps.
This means that two Ethernet plugs and two devices with 1Gbps wired connection support are required for you to test this 2Gbps internet connection at once.
In fact, this is also said by TM itself through their FAQ page as well, which says that two devices with Ethernet support are required to get this paid speed.
This also means that users will not be able to take advantage of the full speed of this 2Gbps connection on a single device, but the total speed present should be fast enough even if you have dozens of devices connected to your network at any one time.
It should also be noted that even at a speed of 1Gbps, your router and device must support a connection with this data transmission rate, and this speed will normally only be shown through a wired connection, and this includes the router that will be provided by TM.
As we reported earlier, the Unifi 2Gbps plan comes with a promotional price of RM399 per month for a two-year contract, while the Unifi 1Gbps plan is shown at a promotional price of RM349 per month for a two-year contract.
