TikTok has previously been banned from being installed on devices owned by civil servants in the United States, Australia, the European Union and New Zealand. But ordinary citizens can still continue to use it without any issues at this time with efforts being made to outright ban this application from operating in the United States.
Last weekend, Montana became the first state in the U.S. to ban TikTok from operating. In a vote in the legislature, a majority of members agreed to pass a bill that would ban it. It now only needs to be signed by the governor for it to take effect from January 2024.
Google and Apple can be fined up to $10,000 a day for allowing apps to be downloaded through their stores. TikTok could also be subject to legal action for the same offence. Individuals who download otherwise will not be prosecuted.
TikTok has issued a statement that it will oppose the bill because it is seen as violating the freedom of expression of its users in Montana which is enshrined in the state constitution.
