Starting tomorrow, April 1st, Twitter will remove the legacy blue smear on accounts that do not pay for a Twitter Blue subscription. Since the announcement, several major media organizations such as the Wall Street Journal and celebrities have said they will not pay the $1000 a month subscription to keep their accounts blue.
According to a report by The New York Times, they saw documents that show Twitter will not charge these expensive subscription fees to the 10,000 organizations with the highest number of followers and the 500 brands that buy the most ads on Twitter. This may be a way to ensure that important accounts and major brands do not leave Twitter in a single negative impact.
The Los Angeles Times issued a statement that it will not pay subscriptions because after April 1 the blue smear no longer indicates that an account has credibility because it can be bought. BuzzFeed also refused to pay a subscription to staff who wanted to continue receiving the legacy blue paint before.
