World's Largest Cargo Plane Owned by Russia Transferred to Ukraine

Antonov An-225 Mriya which is the world's largest cargo plane but it was destroyed in the war between Ukraine and Russia last year. The throne of the world's largest cargo plane is currently held by the Antonov An-124 Ruslan. According to a Simple Flying report, an An-124 aircraft will be transferred from a Russian company to Ukraine.

The An-124 owned by cargo company Volga-Dnepr Airlines has been detained in Canada for the past year after Russia invaded Ukraine. Canada placed a flight ban on all aircraft from Russia from operating in their airspace. Because of this the plane landed at Pearson International Airport in Toronto. Before the airspace was closed, this plane was on a mission to deliver vaccines from China to Canada.

Because Volga-Dnepr Airlines did not pay the parking fee that was already over $300,000, the Canadian government is now transferring the ownership of this An-124 to Ukraine. A total of 55 An-124s have been produced since the first flight in 1982. Each aircraft is capable of carrying up to 150 tons of cargo. This is small compared to the 250 tons that the An-225 can carry.

This Canadian action can be seen as a way to force Russia to pay compensation for the destruction of the An-225. The new An-225 aircraft will be built after the end of the war which so far has not shown that it will end in the near future.
