Some time ago, McAfee security researchers revealed the existence of 60 Play Store applications infiltrated by Goldoson malware. Now they report that there are 38 other applications infiltrated with similar malware.
According to McAfee researchers, 38 applications in the Play Store that have been infiltrated by malware have been downloaded by 35 million Android users worldwide. The malware itself bears a resemblance to Goldoson, whose main function is to inject advertisements onto the device.
However, compared to Goldoson, this HiddenAds action at first did look more tame. Though the action is just as annoying and dangerous as Goldoson. The effect of this malware is as the name implies, namely hidden advertising.
There are already 35 million Android devices worldwide that are victims of this malware. That is turning on ads in the background while playing mobile games. The aim is to make profits for various companies and individuals who are not identified.
At first glance, this kind of malware has no effect on the device. Yet the effect is very annoying. For example, a cellphone can suddenly slow down, even to the point where it can't be used, and all of this happens without knowing the cause.
This malware action targets cellphones that are used by young children, because the applications they infiltrate are also games aimed at children aged 5 to 15. The main target countries are the United States, Canada, South Korea and Brazil.
