Bad news for chipmakers that don't have their own foundries as DigiTimes reports that 90% of TSMC's 3nm chip production capacity has been taken by Apple. Although TSMC is not the first company to offer 3nm chip production (this record is held by Samsung), their production techniques provide higher production percentages and offer better performing chips.
Qualcomm for example uses TSMC for their 4nm chips. With TSMC's capacity almost entirely taken by Apple, Qualcomm needs to find another foundry that can offer production at high capacity.
The 3nm technology is expected to be used on the Apple A17 Bionic and Apple M3 chips. The change to 3nm technology is able to increase performance by up to 15% while at the same time reducing energy consumption by up to 35%.
