Android Background Images Can Now Be Generated By AI And With Cinematic Mode

Background images are probably one of the most basic customizations done by device owners to show their personality. Some like cheerful images and some also use the faces of their loved ones. In short, background images have been limited to pictures stored in the device.

At Google I/O 2023, Google showed some new features specific to the Android operating system's background images that are coming in the near future. In line with the many artificial intelligence (AI) products announced this morning, Android background images can also be generated using AI. In the demo shown, Android can generate background images using some user-supplied proms.

The first prom is what image to generate and in what style. Some images are generated within seconds before they can be used. According to Google each image generated is unique providing true customization.

Another interesting feature is Cinematic Wallpaper. With this feature static images can be animated and made into background images. It's similar to the Cinematic feature that was given to Google Photos last year. Based on the depth information of the photo, the image appears to move with a 3D appearance. When the phone is moved, there is a parallax effect in which the image has dimensions on the 2D screen.

Finally background images can also be generated using emojis. This feature is similar to the one that exists on iOS but is more important. Owners are free to choose the emoji they want to use before being given the choice of style, order and pattern they are arranged on the background image. More interesting is that the emoji background image is interactive as it changes size when pressed on the screen.

As usual all these new features will be present on Pixel devices only first in the autumn corresponding to around this September.
