Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag were launched two years ago to make it easier to track personal property if it goes missing. But soon after both were launched, there were reports of them being misused by criminals to steal vehicles. In more serious issues AirTag is used to track women's movements without them noticing which creates serious privacy issues.
Aware of this fact, Apple and Google released a statement that they will work together to combat the abuse of object tracking devices such as AirTags. These two giant companies have filed a draft recommendation to create a standard for object tracking devices. It is supported by manufacturers such as Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee.
Through it object tracking devices can be detected if they are used for spying purposes on iOS and Android devices. Apple and Google have submitted the specification to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) with the goal of introducing it to iOS and Android devices by the end of 2023.
