A very busy day as Computex 2023 continues with the announcement of new families of CPUs and GPUs under the ARMv9.2 family by ARM this morning. The three latest CPUs Cortex-X4, Cortex-A720, and A520 are the three latest CPUs that will be used by the latest SOC in 2023. Also announced are the Immortalis-720, Mali-G720 and Mali-G620 GPUs.
Cortex-X4 provides up to 15% performance improvement over Cortex-X3 but saves up to 40% power consumption. Meanwhile Cortex-A720 offers power savings of up to 20% while Cortex-A520 offers savings of up to 22%. More interesting is the core cluster configuration of 1+5+2 (Cortex-X4, Cortex-A720 and Cortex A520) on this year's flagship SOC compared to 1+4+3 on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for example.
All of these CPUs only support 64-bit systems in line with the industry starting to phase out 32-bit application support over the last two years. All these CPUs are designed to be used not only for smartphones but also for PCs.
Meanwhile the Immortalis-G720 GPU has 10 cores that provide an average performance increase of up to 15% and energy savings of up to 15%. But at the same time provides an increase in HDR performance up to two times. ARM also said this GPU will support ray tracing but better.
The Mali-G720 and Mali-G620 GPUs are attempts to offer higher graphics performance on devices such as laptops, TV set-top boxes, and wearable devices. The difference with Immortalis is that the Mali-G720- is equipped with 6-9 cores while the Mali-G620 offers up to 5 processing cores for devices that do not require the highest graphics capabilities.
The first chips using out ARMv9.2 will be announced later this year with Qualcomm and MediaTek sure to be among the first two manufacturers to use it in their SOCs.
