Disney+ Loses Another 4 Million Subscribers In Q1 2023

Has the era of Disney+ already begun? For two consecutive quarters the streaming service Disney+ has recorded a reduction in the number of paid subscribers. In Q1 2023, Disney+ had 157.8 million subscribers which is a reduction of around 4 million subscribers in Q4 2022. In that quarter they recorded a decrease of 2.4 million subscribers.

Despite the declining number of subscribers, Disney+ managed to reduce losses by 26% compared to the same quarter of 2022. The decrease in subscriber numbers was due to Disney+ Hotstar losing 4.6 million subscribers in the Indian and Southeast Asian markets. The loss of Indian Cricket Premier League broadcast rights was the catalyst for this sharp reduction.

While Disney+ experienced a decline in subscribers, Netflix rebounded with 232.5 million subscribers in Q1 2023 which is an increase of almost 2 million new subscribers after introducing a new ad-supported plan.
