European Space Solar Power Station Now Entering Concept Phase

The European Space Agency (ESA) announced the SOLARIS project last year with it being a solar power station in space. The energy generated from solar panels in space will be beamed back to earth. Because it is always in space, electricity can be generated 24 hours a day.

ESA has now announced that a contract has been awarded to d by Arthur D Little and Thales Alenia Space to produce the concept to make the SOLARIS project a success. Through these two concepts, ESA will see the feasibility of SOLARIS and what technology needs to be developed to make it a reality. The concept is expected to be presented by the end of this year.

Based on this concept, the decision to proceed with SOLARIS will be made by 2025. In addition to ESA, China and Japan also have plans to develop space solar power systems that are emitted on Earth. Japan wants to make it a reality by 2025 and China by 2028.
