At Google I/O, Google introduced a new generation of their language model (LLM), namely PaLM 2 (Pathways Language Model 2). It is now used as the basis for Bard's artificial intelligence (AI) which is accessible to global users today. The capabilities of PaLM 2 are very interesting because it can generate programming code, code repair suggestions, generate text and much more.
Although PaLM 2 was just announced, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that development of Google Gemini has begun. This LLM is more powerful with multi-modal capabilities. It is still undergoing the training process at Google. After going through the security testing process, access to Gemini will be granted. It's too early to tell what Gemini's new capabilities are compared to PaLM 2. Google only says early data gives a positive indication.
Gemini was rebuilt from the ground up using the expertise of the team at Google Deepmind which has undergone a recent restructuring. AI development is now Google's focus with all products announced this morning having full AI integration.
