Google Will Flag AI Photos After Deepfake Pope and Trump Viral

There was a viral photo of Pope Francis wearing a Balenciaga jacket and Donald Trump being arrested by the police. It's an AI deepfake photo and Google is now about to act.

This photo of the Stylized Pope and Trump being arrested is of course an AI photo. But many people are fooled and the downfall is the spread of hoaxes. Finally, Google provides a new step to mark AI photos that resemble the original.

As quoted from the New York Post, Sunday (14/5/2023) the new steps taken by Google are the insistence of critics who are often dubbed the 'Godfather of AI, namely Dr. Geoffrey Hinton and also Elon Musk. They warned that the sophistication of AI could exacerbate the spread of misinformation online.

Please be aware that AI images may provide inaccurate answers. However, the resulting image is almost indistinguishable from the original.

For this incident, Google will then add markup in the photo metadata that has been generated by the AI model. This is done to show that the image is computer generated.

The caption below the image will note that the image is AI generated. In the near future, other images from other leading publishers including Mijourney and Shutterstock, will also display a similar warning.

In addition, there is a new tool called 'about this image' which will provide additional information with about this image. This feature will also be rolled out in Google's search engine in the coming months.

The search engine will make it easier for users to access information about certain photos that appear in search results. That includes the first photos indexed by Google and anywhere else they appear online.

The new tool that has been created by Google is regarding the features about this image. If the user clicks on the 'about this image' tab then the user will be able to see related articles disputing that the image and the details indicate that it is fake, aka an AI product.

"With this background information on an image, you can get a better sense of whether an image is reliable," says a blog post from Google.

As is well known, last March there was a viral photo of Pope Francis which was made with AI sophistication that he appeared in a white jacket and slang. This photo earned nearly 21 million views on Twitter.

Pablo Xavier, an AI artist who is thought to have created the image, said he was worried to learn that people thought it was a real photo.

"I didn't want the photo to explode like that. It's very scary, people think it's real without questioning it," he said.

Additionally, in another strange case from March, there was also an AI-generated deepfake image that visualized Trump being arrested by police and clashing with the New York Police. Even though this is a photo made by AI, many people believe it and are deceived.
