India Releases Mandatory Directive to Include FM Radio Feature on All Phones Sold

The Indian government has now issued a directive to all phone manufacturers, stating that phones sold in the country must include FM radio support. The feature is also said to need to be activated when selling the phone in that country.

With this move, India aims to bring radio services widely to all users – including in rural areas. It will also make it easier for the government to deliver information using radio.

As many are aware, these days, some low- and mid-spec smartphones still include FM radio features, but not flagship phones. Perhaps with this move, we will see the FM radio feature return widely to all smartphones – not to mention with India now having over 1 billion people.
