Man Arrested In China For Producing Fake News Using ChatGPT

A man in China became the first individual in the world to be arrested for spreading fake news generated using ChatGPT on April 25. The man was arrested in Shenzhen for spreading false news of a train derailment in Gansu county that killed 9 victims. The news was then uploaded using 21 accounts on Baidu where it was read over fifteen thousand times before being deleted.

Authorities managed to track the uploaded status from Shenzen. Although ChatGPT is blocked from being accessed in China, there is a way to bypass this barrier using a VPN. A bill that prevents the spread of fake news in the form of articles or pictures using artificial intelligence was just passed in January this year. If convicted, this man could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
