Meta Fined RM5.9 Billion In Europe Due To Data Transfer To US

The European Union has now imposed a fine of €1.2 billion (~RM5.9 billion) against Meta, after finding that the social service provider transferred European user data to servers based in the United States.

With this fine, it simultaneously leads to the method of how user data of a region is handled by web-based service providers. The European Union legislation itself emphasizes privacy, and when it is managed on another country's server – it is exposed, and lacks privacy, in addition to allowing other parties to access it.

Often we hear cases involving data management involving servers based in China, but this can be said to be one of the early cases involving the transfer of European user data to America that was fined by the European Union.

Authorities have also ordered Meta to stop transferring European user data to America for the next five months. In addition, several steps should be taken by Meta in managing European user data on American servers in the next six months.

Meta is expected to appeal this decision.
