Meta AI announced they are launching Massively Multilingual Speech (MMS) artificial intelligence (AI) that can identify over 4000 languages and then speak over 1000 languages in open source. According to Meta MMS has 10X better capabilities than other previously announced models.
MMS can generate transcripts from overheard conversations and also speak based on typed text. This is part of Meta AI's efforts to preserve as many languages as possible before they become extinct. It is also hoped to be the basis for a universal translation system that allows two people who do not share the same language to chat in real time in the future.
By making MMS an open-source AI, Meta AI invites researchers to contribute to making the mode trainable to understand all languages in the world more accurately.
