Official : Transition To 5G Dual-Network Model In 2024, Single Provider DNB Up To Reach 80% Coverage

The Minister of Communications and Digital today announced that the government has agreed that the implementation of 5G in Malaysia will continue through DNB until it reaches 80% coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023.

While the transition to a dual network will be implemented after that, based on conditions that are parallel at the global level. Computation of service providers in Entity A and Entity B (when transitioning to dual-network) will be decided later.

The minister stated that this decision was made with a shift in focus to elements of adoption and innovation based on 5G technology. The government is aiming for Entity B to start building the second 5G network as early as January 2024.

This move is also expected to overcome concerns about DNB's monopoly that many expressed earlier. Now, the government is focusing on achieving 80% of the 5G coverage area by the end of 2023.

The government will also always work with the Ministry of Finance and DNB as well as service providers to ensure that the transition to a dual network model goes smoothly without affecting the interests of the people and investor confidence.
