The future of the International Space Station (ISS) looks bleak after Russia said it would withdraw in 2024 after its country was subjected to various sanctions by Western countries. The Russian ISS module operated by the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos) is necessary to return the ISS to orbit from time to time. Today NASA announced that Roscosmos has agreed to remain on the ISS until 2028.
This change of heart by Russia ensures that the ISS will operate until at least 2030 according to the original plan the life of this space station will end. The issue of the cost of building their own station and the safety of their astronauts is the reason why the ISS cooperation is continued until 2028 by Russia.
Since its operation in 1998, it has been jointly operated by NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, ESA and CSA. After announcing the withdrawal, Roscosmos showed off a model of their own space station similar to the Chinese-built Tiangong space station.
