The world record for the highest number of streaming viewers has now moved to JioCinema in India after yesterday's live broadcast of the final of the Indian Premier Cricket League (IPL) recorded 33 million simultaneous viewers.
It easily eclipsed the record of 25.3 million viewers who streamed cricket matches on Disney+ Hotstar in July 2019. This record was set because the matches could be streamed for free by JioCinema users.
JioCinema won the exclusive rights to show the IPL last year for a fee of $5 billion until 2027. The rights to show the IPL will be key to Disney+ Hostar's success in the early stages of the platform's launch. But after the rights fell to JioCinema, Disney+ HotStar lost 4.6 million subscribers in India and Southeast Asia last quarter.
