To ensure that the United States has a high-tech chip manufacturing industry, the CHIPS Act was passed last year. Billions of dollars in funds are given to companies that open factories in the U.S. and TSMC is one of them. In a DigiTimes report, TSMC said chips manufactured in the U.S. will be more expensive.
For 4nm and 5nm chips the cost is between 20-30% more due to higher operating costs. Meanwhile, the 28nm, 22nm, 16nm and 12nm chips that will be manufactured in Japan will also be 10-15% more expensive for the same reason. The high cost of manufacturing in the United States is the reason why manufacturing was moved to foreign countries such as China in the 90s.
America only realized their mistake a decade ago when they saw that production is now too centralized in China making it the world's second largest economy.
