Twitter Returns Free API Access For Government Accounts And Essential Services

Twitter charges as much as $50,000 a month to access an API that was previously given free access to those who needed it. This API is necessary for bot accounts and also important services such as public transport service disruption information for example. Since the fee was imposed, several government agencies and public transport have announced that their Twitter accounts will no longer be operational.

The criticism leveled at Twitter and Elon Musk in recent months over its API policy seems to be paying off. Twitter's embarrassing U-turn on their free API access today. Utility accounts for public transport, government bodies, weather and emergency warning services are exempt from paying to access the Twitter API.

This isn't the first time Twitter's police force has been dramatically changed after being criticized. Labels on media allegedly receiving government funding were removed entirely after NPR and the BBC criticized them. There have been too many mistakes made by Elon Musk since taking over Twitter. The thoughtless recklessness caused Jack Dorsey to say since the sale that Twitter's direction was deviating from his expectations in a status posted on his Bluesky page.
