Every country that has access to the internet has an online fraud problem. In Malaysia for example, a loss of 380 million was recorded in 2021 due to this fraud. Vietnam is trying to solve this issue by mandating the use of real-identity accounts by the end of 2023.
Through an amendment to their telecommunications bill, Vietnam will require online accounts to be matched with the identity of the real owner. It will be enforced on services owned by local companies as well as international social media platforms operating in the country. The enforcement of this bill will involve personal accounts as well as companies. A very drastic step to combat the universal issue.
The requirement to use a real identity online is also used in China and North Korea. In these two countries it is to ensure that any online comments left by users can be tracked by the authorities.
