Earlier this week Truecaller said they will start supporting the spam voice call blocking feature in the WhatsApp app. This was done after users in India reported receiving a stream of spam audio calls that interfered with daily activities. Today WhatsApp announced they are doing an update behind the scenes to reduce this incident from happening.
Through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) spam voice calls will be reduced by up to 50% according to WhatsApp. In Indian WhatsApp users, these disturbing calls came from numbers registered in Indonesia (+62), Vietnam (+84), Malaysia (+60), Kenya (+254) and Ethiopia (+251). Swift action was taken by WhatsApp after the Indian Ministry of Information Technology sent them a notice to deal with the problem of spam calls from these international numbers.
The above issue is not only haunting users in India but also in Malaysia with hundreds of complaint statuses uploaded to social media. So far there is still no statement from SKMM or KKD on the issue of spam calls that seem to be made from Malaysia to the point of causing trouble at the international level.
