White House Announces Plan Guidelines for Safe AI Development

The White House today announced plans to produce guidelines and studies on artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure its future safety. Although artificial intelligence is hotly used now, various issues have arisen regarding privacy, data use, ethics and the impact of its use on humans in the near term.

President Joe Biden's administration also announced $140 million in funding for seven national AI research institutes to ensure development that is ethical, reliable, responsible and provides public good. The announcement was made by the White House ahead of a meeting with the CEOs of Alphabet, Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI that will take place today.

Guidelines for the use of AI for government agencies are also being formed to ensure that if it is used it should be based on the safety of the United States citizens. This is to enable their country to be used as an example of the responsible use of AI.

The United States is not the first country to want guidelines in place for AI development. The European Union (EU) and the UK CMA have also announced their plans this week. In China the government of the world's second largest economy asked industry players for their opinion on the use of artificial intelligence and algorithms last month with a mandatory security assessment before it could be rolled out to the public.
