5G Network Now Covers 62.1% of Populated Areas In Malaysia

The Minister of Communications and Digital is now sharing the latest statistics, stating that the 5G network now covers around 62.1% of populated areas in Malaysia, as of 31 May 2023. This simultaneously shows an increase of 2.6% compared to last April 2023.

Despite reaching this high figure, the rate of 5G usage in Malaysia is still low. MCMC previously stated that the 5G usage rate only reached around 3.1% of usage, or involving 1.2 million users.

Some things are still debated by the public, including 5G coverage – which despite reaching 62.1% of populated areas, the coverage in buildings is still low and not very stable.

The government aims for 5G coverage to reach 80% of populated areas by the end of 2023, and it is not yet known how the government plans to increase the use and coverage in buildings for 5G.
