81% of iPhones in the World Are Running iOS 16

Apple has updated the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 device usage data on the Apple developer site. In the new data it was revealed that iOS 16 is now running on 90% of active iPhone models released in the last four years. This was followed by iOS 15 with 8% and older software versions grabbed the remaining percentage of devices.

On the other hand, when trying to include all active iPhones in the world, the iOS 16 update has run on 81% of devices, this figure is up 28% from the iOS 16 usage data that Apple released earlier this year.

For reference, Apple collects usage data based on devices that transact in its App Store.

For the iPad, iPadOS 16 software is now running on 76% of all devices released in the last four years. Meanwhile, 71% of all active iPad models are running iPadOS 16 which is also a 21% increase from the previous figure.

When it comes to adopting the latest software, Apple devices remain several steps ahead of Android. Mostly because of the close integration of the Apple ecosystem, as quoted from Neowin, Monday (5/6/2023).

Until now, the latest stable versions of iOS and iPadOS out there are iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 which were released last month. The device usage data arrives just days before WWDC 2023, where Apple will announce its next major software updates, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.

Among the various features, iOS 17 is expected to bring app sideloading functionality to the iPhone along with redesigned system apps and turn-by-turn navigation on the lock screen. However, the news is that the sideloading feature will be limited to the European region only.

For the iPad, Apple is expected to apply various customizations to the iOS 16 lock screen in the next major update as reported by Neowin.
