AI Images Trigger Misinformation, Twitter Adds Image Fact Check Feature

Twitter has been testing a new tool called Notes on Media to help users identify misleading images and videos.

This step is an attempt by Twitter to stop the spread of information in the midst of the onslaught of fake pictures made with AI (artificial intelligence) technology.

Twitter uses fact-checking from the public through Community Notes, thus Notes on Media is part of the Community Notes feature.

"From AI-generated images to manipulated videos, misleading media is commonplace. Today we're testing a feature that puts superpowers in the hands of contributors, with Notes on Media," the Community Notes account wrote on its Twitter account.

Launching from The News, as seen, Monday (5/6/2023) this new tool will allow notes attached to images to appear automatically on matching images recently and in the future.

Additionally, the new option will allow users to mark posts as 'About images' when media is potentially misleading.

Twitter also clarified that posts marked 'about pictures' will be separated and interpreted as referring to media, not specific tweets.

This feature currently only supports tweets with a single image, but Twitter is actively trying to expand it to allow tweets with multiple images or videos.

However, social media platforms understand that it will take time to improve the image matching procedure.

Twitter will continue to improve its functionality as the trial period progresses and Twitter gathers feedback from users and fact-checkers, helping to create a safer and more trusted information ecosystem on Twitter.

"We'll be monitoring how media posts are used and will be looking for your feedback. We're excited to see the impact of contributors magnified with this launch," the company said.
