ASEAN Is Drafting Artificial Intelligence Governance And Ethics Guidelines

Is artificial intelligence (AI) dangerous to human civilization? Hundreds of experts agreed last month that there is a risk it could cause human extinction if left unchecked, putting it on a par with nuclear weapons. The European Union (EU) and China have already started efforts to control the development of AI. According to a Reuters report, ASEAN member countries are currently in the process of drafting governance and ethics guidelines for the development of artificial intelligence.

This guide is necessary to ensure the safety of 660 million people in the ASEAN region which has 10 member countries. A balance between the benefits of using AI technology and its risks needs to be struck before it's too late. At this time the guide is still being drafted and it may be announced at the meeting of ASEAN heads of state that will take place next year in Singapore.

The short-term effects of generative AI use can already be seen with hundreds of workers in writing, and the arts losing jobs due to the popularity of AI such as ChatGPT and Midjourney
