Last year Frontier became the first supercomputer with processing capabilities beyond 1 ExaFlop. With a processing capability of 1.102 ExaFLOPS it is the world's fastest supercomputer using an AMD EPYC 64C 2GHz chip that has a total of 8,730,112 cores.
Frontier records are about to be broken in the near future as Intel announced they have completed the installation of the Aurora supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory. In theory, Aurora has the ability to process up to 2 ExaFLOPS. A total of 21,248 Max series Intel Xeon CPUs are used and it is also matched with 63,744 Max series Intel Data Center GPUs.
The testing process to find bugs is actively being carried out with the hope that when operational it will be used in the process of producing a new generative artificial intelligence model. The Aurora project was announced in 2015 with it due to begin operations in 2021.
