Eventually NFC May Work at Longer Distances and Charge Devices Wirelessly

NFC (Near Field Communication) technology allows non-cash payments to be made by simply touching the phone to the payment terminal. It also makes it easy for accessories like headphones to be tethered to the device and Touch n' Go cards are added value. Now the NFC Forum body that provides standards for this technology is starting to draft its future until 2028 with various features that will make it more useful.

NFC will eventually have a longer detection distance than the current 5mm. The new standard wants to increase it up to 30mm. With this the device no longer needs to be at a very close distance to be detected by the NFC sensor.

More interesting is the proposal to increase NFC power from 1W to 3W. In theory, devices within the NFC range can be charged wirelessly. Another feature is introducing one scan for multiple tasks. This may be useful for reading more than one plane, concert or movie ticket simultaneously. Current technology requires that each ticket be scanned one by one.

NFC Forum has representatives from major companies such as Apple, Google, Huawei, Identiv, Infineon, NXP, Qualcomm, Sony, and STMicroelectronics.
