Oppo has quietly introduced a mixed reality (MR) headset at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2023 event, ahead of Apple which has long been rumored to be launching a similar device.
The device, called Oppo MR Glass Developer Edition, is designed for developers to create applications and find the best use cases for mixed reality technology. The headset is powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Plus chipset.
The technology embedded in this headset includes video pass-through (VPT) with a pancake lens, two RGB front cameras and a 120Hz refresh rate. Don't miss additional features such as SuperVOOC fast charging, heart rate monitor, and two joystick controllers.
Mixed reality is a technology that combines virtual reality and augmented reality. MR devices allow users to view digital images or virtual videos in the real world and interact with those media.
Even though mixed reality technology is still very new, Oppo is optimistic that this technology can become a future generation platform after smartphones.
"It (mixed reality) has the potential to become the next computing platform," said Oppo Director of XR Technology Xu Yi, as quoted by CNBC, Sunday (4/6/2023).
Oppo has actually released several headset devices before. Last year they released AR glasses called Oppo Air Glass 2 which looks like regular glasses but can display information on the screen.
Meanwhile, Oppo MR Glass Developer Edition has a larger form and is equipped with a controller that allows users to interact with the information displayed in front of them.
The MR headset will be available to developers in China from the second half of this year. Oppo says there are no plans to sell this headset commercially yet.
The release of the Oppo mixed reality headset was a little surprising because it had never been rumored before. They managed to overtake Apple, which is said to be announcing its first MR headset at the WWDC 2023 event next week.
