Samsung Reportedly Wants to Produce Standalone XR Chip

Samsung once had several virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headset products under the Odyssey family. But this effort was stopped a few years ago due to lack of response from users. But earlier this year, Samsung confirmed they were working with Google and Snapdragon to develop an augmented reality (XR) headset.

According to a Korean Economic Daily report, Samsung also wants to produce its own XR chip in the near future. Among those being refined is either developing a new XR chip or modifying the existing Exynos chip. All of these plans are still in the early stages according to sources with more detailed information not disclosed.

Qualcomm is the company with the largest market share of XR chips at this time. Their Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 chip is for example used in devices such as the Meta Quest 3 in partnership with Meta has been signed for several years. Samsung's chip business is suffering losses due to stock dumping, lack of demand for Exynos chips and the post-pandemic global economic situation.
