SK Hynix Begins Mass Production of 238-Layer Storage Chips

SK Hynix is among the famous memory and storage chip makers, especially for their 176-layer 3D NAND chips used by various brands.

Recently, they have announced that they have started mass production of 238-layer 4D chips. This chip is expected to be used not only in premium class SSD storage, but also for the internal storage of smart devices.

The advantage of using a 238-layer NAND chip is seen in several forms. First is through the amount of storage that can be developed with only one chip, SK Hynix has developed a storage component using this 4D chip, and comes in 512Gb or 64GB storage.

It also comes with a data transmission rate of 2400MT/s which will be beneficial for those who want to develop storage that takes advantage of the PCIe 5.0 connection and has a data transmission and reading rate of at least 12GB/s.

For SK Hynix as well, this 238-layer NAND chip is seen to have a 34 percent higher production efficiency compared to the previous 176-layer chip, which is seen to not only allow SK Hynix to produce more chips than before, but also to do so at a lower cost lower, especially in terms of material costs and also energy consumption.

SK Hynix's 238-layer NAND chip is expected to be used in smart devices first, and is expected to arrive for laptops, and then use for desktop-class computer SSD storage later.
