The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission today stated that the company behind Facebook and Instagram, Meta failed to take sufficient action in dealing with issues related to harmful content. Because of that, MCMC will not hesitate to take legal action against Meta.
According to SKMM, the Facebook platform is plagued by a significant amount of harmful content involving elements of race, royal institutions and religion - in addition to impersonation, online gambling, and fraudulent advertisements. In parallel, the MCMC itself has contacted Meta to remove the content.
However, it was stated that Meta failed to take sufficient action, in addition to the slow and unsatisfactory response, not commensurate with the seriousness of the matter.
As many are aware, fraudulent advertisements are rampant on the Facebook platform – including using the names of prominent people such as celebrities, businessmen and even politicians.
MCMC stated that it does not hesitate to take definitive measures or legal action against Meta as a measure to ensure that users are protected and have a safe environment in the digital world.
SKMM also emphasized that they will not compromise with the misuse of online and telecommunications platforms, networks or online facilities continuously for malicious cyber activities, or any content that disrupts racial stability.
