Twitter's Head of Trust and Safety Ella Irwin suddenly resigned from her position on Thursday (1/6) yesterday. The day after, Head of Brand Safety and Ad Quality A.J. Brown also resigned.
Irwin became Twitter's trust and safety boss last November, replacing Yoel Roth who stepped down shortly after Elon Musk took over Twitter.
For the past seven months, Irwin has been in charge of leading the Twitter team that fights disinformation, removes offensive content, and helps maintain the integrity of the platform.
Irwin has also been implicated in several scandals, including sharing internal Twitter information with journalist Bari Weiss as part of the 'Twitter Files' report and reportedly ordering the blocking of a Twitter account that shared information about Elon Musk's private plane.
Irwin did not reveal his reasons for leaving Twitter. But her resignation announcement came at the same time as the distribution of the controversial documentary 'What is a Woman' produced by conservative media The Daily Wire.
The Daily Wire claims Twitter canceled the agreement that allowed them to distribute the film for free on Twitter. However, Twitter's content moderation team flagged the video for violating "misgendering" rules and limiting the video's visibility.
Musk said the film was definitely allowed on Twitter, and instead blamed his content moderation team.
"This is the fault of many on Twitter. This film is definitely allowed," Musk said in a reply to Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing, as quoted by Gizmodo, Saturday (3/6/2023).
A day after Irwin resigned, Twitter was also left by Head of Brand Safety and Ad Quality A.J Brown. It's not known why Brown stepped down, but Platformer's report appears to be in directives to enforce its ad policies only for illegal content and spam.
This policy made some employees in the head and safety division draw stricter rules and get confused about handling ads on Twitter that contain hate speech.
