Google Ordered to Pay $338.7 Million in Compensation for Chromecast Infringing Patents

A court in Texas today ordered Google to pay $338.7 million (RM1.5 billion) in compensation for infringing three technology patents owned by Touchstream. Google's infringed patent applies to Chromecast to stream content on the device to a television.

Touchstream filed a lawsuit against Google in 2021. In a document filed. they claimed Google had met with them to look at content streaming technology in 2011 before later saying they were not interested. The patent for this technology was filed in 2010 by the founders of Touchstream and Chromecast was only launched in 2013.

In addition to Chromecast, Google also accused Touchstream of misusing their patents on Google Home and Nest. Google will appeal the court's decision, claiming that Touchstream's patent is invalid. Last May, Google was also ordered to pay compensation to Sonos for being found guilty of infringing the technology patent for broadcasting audio on Chromecast.
