Google reportedly canceled development of their smart glasses earlier this year after laying off thousands of employees in an effort to cut costs, according to a Business Insider report. Google's smart glasses are believed to have augmented reality (AR) capabilities similar to those supported by the Ray-Ban Stories glasses and are an improvement on the AR glasses with subtitle support shown last year.
Development of its own hardware is suspended but Google is now focusing on software development of Android "XR" for headsets and Android "micro XR" for smart glasses. Google has already confirmed collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm to develop their AR headsets earlier this year with more information about it to be shared in the next few months.
This collaboration is seen as an answer to Apple who launched their Vision Pro recently with it going on sale early next year. There is still no information about the Google, Samsung and Qualcomm headsets at this time as they are successfully kept under wraps.
