It's like a scene in a Hollywood dystopian science fiction movie where a 3D image of an individual has been misused without the body's owner's permission. But the reality is that studios and producers in Hollywood want to use the scanned images of additional actors forever without any payment.
Talks between the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAF-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to reach a consensus this week. As a result, members of SAG-AFTRA will strike together with members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) who have been doing it since May 4.
It was the first time since 1960 that members of these two unions went on strike simultaneously. Due to this strike all film and TV production stopped. The actor will not do any promotion for the finished film as a sign of solidarity.
In both situations the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by AMPTP in the future is a core issue that cannot be resolved. Actors don't want their personal images used without payment and writers don't want their work to be used by AI to produce scripts also without payment. AMPTP's desire is seen as an attempt to eliminate sources of search for additional actors and new writers who want to establish themselves.
What happens in Hollywood often becomes a template in other countries. In Malaysia so far there is still no movement to do the same because the union does not dare to oppose the producers and studios.
