LiFi Standard Now Official – 9.6 Gbps Internet Through Lights

The standard for internet networks using light or better known as LiFi is confirmed by IEEE. LiFi will use the official name IEEE 802.11bb with speeds ranging from 10 mbps to 9.9 Gbps.

LiFi works by flashing lights that occur at such a high frequency that the human eye will not notice. It is not a new technology and this term was introduced by Harld Hass, a professor at the University of Edinburgh in 2011. He predicted that in the future every lamp could become an internet network transmitter through the LiFi system.

The difference with WiFi is that WiFi uses the spectrum of radio signals while LiFi uses the spectrum of light waves. Visible, infrared and ultra violet light spectrums can be used.

LiFi is useful in situations where radio waves cause interference. The downside is that it can be disturbed by sunlight, has a short range and cannot penetrate walls. It will not replace WiFi rather it is used in conjunction with it. Future modems will be equipped with lights that emit LiFi light. The device will intelligently choose between LiFi and WiFi depending on the situation.
